Mic test
Speak and watch the level bar move live. It tells you at once whether the microphone works, is too quiet, or is so loud it distorts. Choose another microphone, record a sample and play it back. It runs in your browser, and your sound is not sent anywhere.

Microphone options
Browsers usually switch these three helpers on, which suits online meetings. Switch them off to hear the raw microphone. Changing one restarts the listening.

How to use
- Press "Start the mic test". The browser asks whether to allow the microphone: choose "Allow".
- Speak or clap. The level bar should move, and the line under it tells you whether the microphone is silent, too quiet, fine or too loud.
- If you have several microphones (for example the laptop's and a headset's), choose the one you want from the Microphone list.
- Press "Record 5 seconds and play it back" to hear how the microphone sounds. To hear yourself live, put headphones on first and switch on the live listening option.
- Press "Stop" when you are done. The microphone is switched off and its status light goes out.
Nothing leaves your device
The sound from the microphone is measured and played on this page only. It is not uploaded to freesabai's server or anyone else's. The sample you record is held in this page's memory for a while and is gone when you close the page. We ask for the microphone only when you press Start, and switch it off when you press Stop or leave the page. The website only counts how many times this page is opened (it never sends a file name, size or content, and you can switch the counting off at the foot of the page; see the privacy policy).
Good to know
- If the bar does not move at all, try another microphone, check that the microphone is not muted (on the microphone, on the headset, or in the system sound settings) and that no other program is using it.
- If the browser does not ask, or says it is blocked, click the lock icon beside the address and allow the microphone. On Windows and Mac the system privacy settings must also allow the browser to use the microphone.
- Microphone names appear after you allow it the first time; before that you see device numbers.
- A good level for speech is a bar about halfway that does not hit the end. If the bar turns red, the sound is starting to distort.
- Hearing yourself live through speakers causes a squeal (feedback), because the microphone picks up the speakers and the sound goes round and round. Use headphones only. If this tool hears a squeal, it switches the live listening off. While a sample is being recorded, live listening is always off.
- The echo, noise and automatic volume helpers are browser features. Switching them off gives you the rawer sound, which suits checking the microphone itself, but it is not what you hear in an online meeting.
- iPhone and iPad: Safari works, but the sound stops if you switch to another app or lock the screen.
