Random pickers and timers

Random number generator

Pick random whole numbers in a range you choose, one or many at once, with or without repeats. Handy for seat numbers, presentation order, quiz questions or calling on a student number.

Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If this message stays for more than a few seconds, JavaScript is turned off or the page did not load completely. Turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Enter the lowest and highest number (both included; negatives are fine) and how many numbers you want.
  2. Keep "No repeats" when each number may come up once, such as seat order, or turn it off when repeats are fine, such as simulating many rolls.
  3. Press "Generate" or Space, then copy the result if you need it elsewhere. Go full screen for a projector.

Every number has the same chance

It uses your browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with a method that does not lean towards small numbers, so every number in the range is equally likely. Without repeats it never builds a list of the whole range, so even a huge range is instant.

Picking people rather than numbers? The random name picker or the wheel spinner saves matching names to numbers. For board games, roll dice.

Questions and answers

How wide can the range be?

Minimum and maximum can be any whole numbers from minus 10 to the 15th to 10 to the 15th, negatives included, and you can draw up to 1,000 numbers at a time.

Can I get numbers without repeats?

Yes. Choose no repeats and every number in the result is different. If you ask for more numbers than the range holds, the tool asks you to lower the count or widen the range.

Can it decide a presentation order?

Yes. Set 1 to the number of groups, ask for that many with no repeats and leave sorting off to get a random order, or use the name picker if the groups have names.
