Random pickers and timers

Random team generator

Paste a list of students, colleagues or players and split them into random teams in one click. Choose how many teams or how many people per team. The teams show as cards you can copy straight into a chat.

How to use it

  1. Enter one name per line: paste from Excel or a chat, or open a .txt or .csv file.
  2. Pick "By number of teams" and say how many teams, or "By people per team" and say how many in each. The line under the options tells you the result before you press the button.
  3. Press "Make teams", or "Shuffle again" for a new split. Then "Copy as text" for a chat or "Save CSV" for Excel (one column per team).

How the split works

The whole list is shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so everyone is equally likely to land in any team, then people are dealt round the teams one by one. Team sizes therefore differ by one at most: 13 people in 4 teams makes 4, 3, 3, 3. By people per team, you get the fewest teams that size allows, evened out: 12 people at 5 a team makes 3 teams of 4, not 5, 5 and a lonely 2.

To call people up one at a time, use the random name picker; to time the group work, the countdown timer.

Your names stay on your device

Everything runs in your browser. The names are not uploaded anywhere and not stored in the browser. The site only counts that the page was opened and that a result was made, never the names (you can turn counting off at the bottom of the site; see the privacy policy).

Questions and answers

What if the people do not divide evenly?

Group sizes never differ by more than one: 13 people in 4 groups gives 4, 3, 3, 3. With 5 per group and 12 people you get 3 groups of 4, not a small leftover group of 2.

Can I name the groups?

Yes. Type one group name per line. Without names they are Group 1, Group 2 and so on, and groups past your list get numbers.

Can I send the result in a chat or open it in Excel?

Yes. Copy gives tidy text grouped by team, ready for a chat, and Save CSV gives a file Excel opens with Thai intact.
