Character, word and line counter

Paste text and see the number of characters (with and without spaces), words (Thai words too, which have no spaces between them), lines, sentences and paragraphs, with reading time, the commonest words and how many characters are left for an X post, an SMS and SEO. It runs in your browser and your text is not sent anywhere.

This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste text (or press "Open file"). Every number updates at once.
  2. Look at the boxes for characters, words and sentences. Thai and other words are counted apart.
  3. Look at "Limits" for how many characters are left or over for an X post, an SMS, a page title and a meta description.

Frequently asked questions

How are Thai words counted when there are no spaces?

With the browser's Thai word segmenter (Intl.Segmenter), which knows where Thai words end: "ไปโรงเรียน" counts as 2 words. The result is close to most word processors but not identical in every case, because Thai can be split in more than one way. English words are counted by spaces and punctuation.

What is the difference between "characters" and "visible characters"?

Thai has vowels and tone marks stacked on a consonant: "ที่" is 3 characters but one the eye sees. Emoji are the same: some are built from several characters. The main counter counts characters (Unicode); the "visible" counter counts what the eye sees. "Bytes" is the size when saved as UTF-8, where each Thai letter takes 3 bytes.

What is the length limit of an SMS?

An SMS with only the standard (GSM) characters holds 160 per message. With Thai or an emoji it switches to UCS-2 encoding and holds only 70. A longer message is cut into parts of 153 (or 67 for Thai) characters, and carriers usually charge per part. The tool tells you how many messages it will take.

Good to know

Your data stays on your device

Everything runs in your browser. What you type, paste or open is not sent to freesabai's servers or anyone else's, and is not kept in the browser: close the page and it is gone. The site only counts how many times this page was opened and how many times someone copied or saved a result (never what was pasted or the result, and you can switch the counting off in the footer; see the privacy policy).
