Encrypt a file with a password

Lock any file with a password to get a .fsenc file that cannot be opened without it, and unlock it back to the original here. It runs in your browser; the file and the password stay on your device.

Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Choose a file or drop it on the box. Any kind of file, up to 500 MB.
  2. Set a password and type it again. Press "Encrypt the file" and you get the same name with .fsenc added.
  3. To open it again, choose the .fsenc file, enter the password and press "Unlock the file": you get the original back under its original name.

How safe is it

Your files stay on your device

Everything runs in your browser. The file and the password are not sent to freesabai's server or anyone else's, and nothing is kept in the browser: close the page and it is gone. The site only counts that this page was opened and how many times a result was saved (never the file name or content; you can turn counting off at the bottom of the site, see the privacy policy).

Questions and answers

Can I recover a .fsenc file if I forget the password?

No. We do not have the password and cannot open the file. A wrong password and a damaged file cannot be told apart, so keep the password safe.

Can other programs open a .fsenc file?

No. It is freesabai's own format and opens only on this page. If the recipient needs ordinary software, make a ZIP with an AES-256 password instead.

Are the file and password sent to a server?

No. It runs in your browser with the browser's own Web Crypto and nothing is kept: close the page and it is gone.
