Video to GIF

Make a GIF from an MP4, WebM or MOV clip: pick the part you want (up to 30 seconds), set the width, frames per second and speed, crop it to a square if you like, and preview it before saving. It runs in your browser and the video is sent nowhere.

Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a video (MP4, WebM, MOV or MKV, as far as this browser plays them). It shows in the page, ready to play.
  2. Set the start and the end: type a time as minutes:seconds such as 1:05.500, or play to the moment you want, pause, and press "Use this moment as the start" or "… the end". It starts with the first 5 seconds.
  3. Choose the width, frames per second, speed and palette and check the size guess. Press "Make the GIF", wait for the two steps (taking the frames, then making the GIF), watch the preview and press "Save the GIF".

Good to know

Your files stay on your device

Everything runs in your browser (the GIF is made in another thread of the browser, still on your device). The video and the GIF made are not sent to freesabai's servers or anyone else's, and nothing is kept in the browser: close the page and it is all gone. Use it with clips you have the right to use. The site only counts that this page was opened and how many times a result was saved (no file names or contents, and you can turn counting off at the foot of the site; see the privacy policy).

Questions and answers

Why is the GIF so much bigger than the video?

A GIF stores every frame as its own picture and compresses far less than video. Make it smaller with a shorter range, a smaller width, fewer frames per second or one palette for the file.

Why will some videos not open?

The tool uses the browser's own video player. MP4 (H.264) and WebM open almost everywhere, HEVC only on some devices, and AVI or WMV not at all: convert those to MP4 first.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds at a time, and frames times picture size must fit in memory, which is less on a phone. The default of 5 seconds at 480 px and 10 frames a second works on any device.
