Extract TAR, TAR.GZ, TGZ and GZ

Open a .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar or .gz from Linux, a Mac or a server. See the files inside, save them one by one, extract into a folder, or turn everything into a ZIP that Windows opens. In your browser; the file is not sent anywhere.

Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .tar.gz, .tgz, .tar or .gz, or drop it on the box. The files and folders inside are listed with their sizes and dates.
  2. Press "Save" on a file, tick several and save them, or "Extract into a folder" (nothing ticked = everything).
  3. Or press "Save as a ZIP" for one ZIP that Windows opens with a double-click.

Good to know

Your files stay on your device

Everything runs in your browser. The file is not sent to freesabai's server or anyone else's, and nothing is kept in the browser: close the page and it is gone. The site only counts that this page was opened and how many times a result was saved (never the file name or content; you can turn counting off at the bottom of the site, see the privacy policy).

Questions and answers

How do I open a tar.gz file on Windows?

Choose the .tar.gz or .tgz file on this page to see the files inside, then save them one by one or all as a ZIP, which Windows opens by itself. Nothing to install.

Can it open .tar.xz, .tar.bz2, .7z or .rar?

Not yet. It opens .tar, .tar.gz, .tgz and .gz; other kinds are reported as not supported. Use 7-Zip, which is free.

Why can some entries not be saved?

Links (symlinks and hardlinks) and device files in a TAR only mean something on Linux or a Mac, so they are skipped and marked in the list. Ordinary files all save.
