HTML / Word / Google Docs to Markdown

Copy from Word, Google Docs or a web page and paste into the left box: Markdown comes out at once, with headings, bold, nested lists, tables, links and code. You can also paste HTML source or open a .html file. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Open the document in Word or Google Docs (or a web page), select the text and press Ctrl+C (Mac: ⌘+C).
  2. Click the left box and press Ctrl+V. The tool takes the formatted HTML from the clipboard and the Markdown appears on the right (or paste HTML source, or choose a .html file).
  3. Pick the heading and bullet style you like, then Copy or Download .md.

Your data stays on your device

Everything happens in your browser. The text and files are not sent to the freesabai server or anywhere else, and nothing is kept in the browser. The site only counts that someone opened this page and how many times Copy or Download was used (not the content; you can turn counting off at the bottom of the site, see the privacy policy).

Questions and answers

How do I turn a Word or Google Docs document into Markdown?

Open the document, select the text and press Ctrl+C, then click the left box here and press Ctrl+V. The Markdown appears at once, with headings, lists and tables.

Why are the pictures from Word missing?

Pictures copied from Word usually point to a temporary file on that computer, and embedded pictures are too long for Markdown. Save them as files and link them yourself.

Where did colours, fonts and underline go?

Markdown has no such formatting, so only the structure is kept: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, pictures, lists, tables and code.
