Open a Word file (.docx) and get plain text (.txt), a single HTML page or Markdown, with headings, bold, lists, tables, links, pictures and footnotes kept. Preview it before saving. It runs in your browser; the file is not sent anywhere.
Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.
How to use it
- Choose or drop a Word file (.docx). A preview of the document shows on the page right away.
- Pick plain text, HTML or Markdown (tick the box if you also want the headers and footers).
- Press "Save the file" to get a UTF-8 .txt, .html or .md file.
Good to know
- You get the content and its structure: headings, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, numbered and bulleted lists (nested, numbered the way Word shows them), tables (with merged cells), links, pictures, footnotes and endnotes (at the end) and the text in text boxes.
- Fonts, colours, sizes, line spacing, page layout and picture positions do not come along, so the result looks plainer than in Word.
- With tracked changes, deleted text is left out and inserted text is kept (as if you accepted all changes). Fields such as page numbers or a table of contents keep the value last saved in the file.
- Pictures are only in the HTML (inside the one file, can be turned off); text and Markdown have none. EMF/WMF pictures that browsers cannot show are left out. Only http, https and email links are kept.
- Only .docx (Word 2007 and later) works. Open an old .doc, .odt, .rtf or .pages file in its program and save it as .docx first. Password-protected files cannot be opened.
- The HTML file has no scripts and every piece of text in it is safely escaped; open it in any browser.
For spreadsheets use Excel to CSV / JSON or CSV / JSON to Excel. For Thai text that shows as strange characters use Fix garbled Thai text.
Your files stay on your device
Everything runs in your browser. The file is not uploaded to freesabai or anyone else and nothing is stored in the browser; close the page and it is gone. The site only counts that this page was opened and how many times someone saved a result (no file names or content, and you can turn counting off at the bottom of the site; see the privacy policy).

Can it convert an old .doc file?
No, only .docx (Word 2007 and later). Open the .doc in Word or Google Docs and save it as .docx first. The same goes for .odt, .rtf and .pages files.
Does the HTML file include the pictures?
Yes, they are embedded so the single HTML file shows them without a picture folder. Untick the pictures option for a smaller file. Plain text and Markdown have no pictures.
Will text deleted with tracked changes show up?
No. Deleted text is left out and inserted text is kept, as if you accepted every change. Comments in the document are not included.
