Unzip with garbled Thai file names

ZIPs made on Thai Windows usually store file names in the old Thai encoding (TIS-620), so on a Mac, a phone or Windows in another language the names come out as garbage. Open the ZIP here to see the right names, save files one by one, or make a new ZIP whose names read right everywhere. In your browser; the file is not sent anywhere.

Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If you still see this after a few seconds, JavaScript is switched off in your browser or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.

How to use it

  1. Choose the ZIP. The files inside are listed with their names read as Thai.
  2. If the names still look wrong (a ZIP from Japan or China, say), change "file names are written in" until they read right.
  3. Press "Save" for single files, or "Make a new ZIP with readable names" for the same ZIP with names stored as UTF-8, which unzip right on any computer.

Good to know

Your files stay on your device

Everything runs in your browser. The ZIP and the files in it are not sent to freesabai's server or anyone else's, and nothing is kept in the browser: close the page and it is gone. The site only counts that this page was opened and how many times a result was saved (never the file name or content; you can turn counting off at the bottom of the site, see the privacy policy).

Questions and answers

Unzipped files have garbled Thai names, how to fix?

The ZIP was made on Thai Windows, which stores names as TIS-620. Open it here and the Thai names are decoded; save files one by one or make a new ZIP with UTF-8 names.

Can it open a password-protected ZIP?

No. Password-protected ZIPs, ZIP64 over 4 GB and split ZIPs are not supported, and the tool says so clearly. Use a ZIP program on your computer for those.

How is the new ZIP different from the old one?

Every file's content, date and time are the same; only the names are stored as UTF-8 with the flag that says so, so Thai names read right on Windows, Mac or phones.
