Cryptogram maker
Type a secret message, a quote, a riddle or a word of praise, and every letter turns into a code number or symbol; the same letter always has the same code. The child writes letters over the codes until the message can be read, with a code table to keep track and a few letters given to start.
Getting the tool ready…This tool needs JavaScript. If this message stays for more than a few seconds, JavaScript is turned off or the page did not load completely: turn JavaScript on or reload the page.
The sheet you make is yours: use it in class, print and sell it or sell the file, no credit needed. Everything is made in your browser; the text is not sent anywhere or kept, and it is gone when you close the page.
How to use it
- Type 1-10 lines (up to 120 characters each). Choose numbers or symbols for the code and how many letters to give as hints.
- "New random sheet" draws a new code. The hint letters are filled in wherever they appear, in the message and in the code table.
- Press "Print / Save as PDF". The key fills in every box and gives the message in full.
Good to know
- Capitals and small letters share a code (A and a are the same). Spaces, digits and punctuation stay as they are, which helps to guess short words.
- Thai is coded letter by letter: a consonant, a vowel, a tone mark and the silent mark each get a code of their own (not a whole cluster). Marks written above or below show on a dotted circle, like ◌่, when given as hints and in the key.
- There are 50 symbols; a message with more different letters than that uses numbers instead, and the page says so. For other word puzzles try the double puzzle or the crossword.

Questions and answers
How does the code work?
Each letter gets a number or symbol of its own, the same everywhere it appears; capitals and small letters share a code. Spaces and punctuation stay. New random sheet draws a new code.
How is Thai coded?
Letter by letter: a consonant, a vowel, a tone mark and the silent mark each have a code, not a whole cluster, so Thai text uses more codes than English. Give 4 hint letters for young children.
How do the hints and the code table work?
The hints are 0, 2 or 4 letters given, filled in wherever they appear. The code table under the message has a box under every code to note the letters found. The key fills in the whole table.
