Measuring with a ruler worksheets

A centimetre ruler drawn at its real size: read the length of a bar above it, draw a line of the length asked, or measure between two arrows that do not start at zero. To the centimetre, half centimetre or millimetre, new lengths every time, with a key.

How to use it

  1. Pick the kind of sheet: read the length of the grey bar from 0 (a line to write on), draw a line of the length asked above the ruler, or measure between two arrows that do not start at 0 (a subtraction).
  2. Pick how fine the lengths are: whole centimetres to begin with, then half centimetres, then millimetres. Pick a 10 or 15 cm ruler and the number of problems. The sheet appears on the right at once; "New random sheet" gives another.
  3. Press "Print / Save as PDF" and set the scale to 100% (not fit to page): the ruler on paper is then life-size, and a real ruler laid on it matches. The answer key is the last page.

Questions and answers

Is the ruler on paper life-size?

Yes, when printed on A4 at 100% scale (not fit to page). It is drawn in millimetres with centimetre, half-centimetre and millimetre marks. Lay a real ruler on it before printing a stack.

Which kinds of sheet are there?

Read the length of a bar from 0, draw a line of a given length above the ruler, and measure between two arrows that do not start at 0. Lengths to the centimetre, half centimetre or millimetre, on a 10 or 15 cm ruler.

How are the answers written?

In decimal centimetres, such as 7.5 cm or 7.3 cm. Between the arrows the key writes 9.5 − 2 = 7.5 cm; for drawing a line it shows the ruler with a bar of that length. Every length sits exactly on the step chosen.
