Fill in the blank worksheet generator

Type or paste a text and put square brackets round the words the class should fill in, or let the page blank every n-th word. The blanks are numbered, a word bank can sit above the text, and the key lists the words by number.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste a text and put square brackets round each word or phrase to leave out, such as Elephants eat [grass]. The bracketed words are the key.
  2. Or choose "Every 3rd, 4th, 5th or 7th word" and the page leaves words out for you, no brackets needed. Thai text uses the browser's word splitter (recent Chrome, Edge and Safari have one).
  3. Tick the word bank for words to choose from; "New random sheet" shuffles the bank. Then press "Print / Save as PDF".

Questions and answers

How do I mark the words to leave out?

Put square brackets round a word or phrase, such as Elephants eat [grass]. Each one becomes a numbered blank and goes into the key. Or let the page blank every 3rd, 4th, 5th or 7th word.

Can it blank words in Thai, which has no spaces?

Yes, with the Thai word splitter built into the browser (Intl.Segmenter in recent Chrome, Edge and Safari). Without it the page asks for brackets, and its splits may not always be the ones you want.

What is the word bank?

A box above the text with all the answers in a shuffled order, for the class to choose from. New random sheet shuffles it again; untick it to have them recall the words.
