Math word problems

A fresh set of word problems every time you press the button: choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or a mix, the size of the numbers and how many. The problems are built from many sentence patterns with children's names and everyday things, never go below zero, always divide evenly, and each has room to work and an answer line. The key gives the number sentence.

How to use it

  1. Choose the kind of problem, the size of the numbers and how many. The problems appear on the right at once; "New random sheet" gives a new set (new names, things, numbers and sentence patterns).
  2. "Up to 20" suits first grade, "up to 100" first and second, "up to 1,000" second and third. Multiplication and division keep the number of groups small (up to 10-30, by range).
  3. Press "Print / Save as PDF". The answer key on the last page gives the number sentence and the answer for every problem (untick it to leave it out).

Questions and answers

How are the problems made?

From nine sentence patterns per kind, twelve children's names and twenty everyday things, with numbers drawn for the range you choose. Press New random sheet for another set, as often as you like.

Can a subtraction go below zero, or a division leave a remainder?

No. The first number of a subtraction is always the larger, and every division is made from a product, so it comes out even. Both numbers are 2 or more, and sums and products stay within the range.

What does the answer key give?

The number sentence and the answer of every problem, such as 12 + 5 = 17, answer 17. The unit (candies, bags, children) is for the child to write on the answer line of each problem.
