Long division
Long division problems with the bracket drawn: a divisor of 1 or 2 digits into a dividend of 2 to 4 digits, even divisions, remainders or a mix, three to a row with room to work under each. Tick "graph paper" to help children keep the columns straight. The key gives the quotient, the remainder and the check.

How to use it
- Choose the size of the divisor and the dividend, whether there are remainders, and how many problems. They appear on the right at once; "New random sheet" gives another set from the same choices.
- For children who are just starting long division, tick "graph paper": faint cells under each problem help them write the quotient and the products in the right columns.
- Press "Print / Save as PDF". The answer key on the last page gives the quotient, the remainder and the check, quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend (untick it to leave it out).
Good to know
- The bracket is the one used in Thailand and the United States: the divisor on the left, a curve, then a bar over the dividend, with the quotient written above the bar. Every digit sits in a cell of its own so the columns line up.
- The divisor is never 0 or 1 and the quotient is at least 2. Even divisions are made from products, so they always come out even; problems with remainders take a dividend the divisor does not divide, so the remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
- The space under each problem grows with the size of the dividend (12 four-digit problems may run onto a second page; no problem is cut across pages).
- For short division or division facts first, use the math drills set to division and the times tables.

Questions and answers
Which division bracket is used?
The one used in Thailand and the United States: the divisor on the left, a curve, then a bar over the dividend, with the quotient above the bar. Each digit sits in its own cell, with room under each problem to work.
How do I choose remainders?
Pick none, every problem, or a mix. Even divisions are made from products, so they always come out even; a problem with a remainder always has one smaller than the divisor. The divisor is never 0 or 1.
What does graph paper do?
Ticked, faint cells are drawn under every problem so children write the quotient, the products and the differences in the right columns. Good when long division is new; it prints as light grey lines.
