Place value

Place value sheets, one kind at a time: write numbers in expanded form, give the value of the underlined digit, compare numbers with > < =, or round to the nearest ten, hundred or thousand. Choose numbers of 2 to 6 digits and how many problems, with an answer key.

How to use it

  1. Choose the kind, the number of digits and how many problems. They appear on the right at once; "New random sheet" draws new numbers.
  2. Each sheet has one kind. For several kinds, make and print one sheet after another; the title follows the kind until you type your own.
  3. Press "Print / Save as PDF". The answer key is the last page (untick it to leave it out).

Questions and answers

Which kinds are there?

Four, one to a sheet: expanded form (4,352 = 4,000 + 300 + 50 + 2), the value of the underlined digit, comparing with greater-than, less-than and equals signs, and rounding to tens, hundreds or thousands; 2 to 6 digits.

Which rounding rule is used?

5 and above rounds up: 45 becomes 50 and 4,350 becomes 4,400. The place is drawn from ten, hundred and thousand as far as the digits allow; 2-digit numbers round to tens only.

Why do the pairs to compare look alike?

On purpose: about half are the same digits in another order, such as 4,352 and 4,532, so each place has to be checked from the left, and about one pair in ten is equal to practise the = sign.
